Graduating from the University of Sydney

Graduation invitations

Three weeks prior to each scheduled ceremony, graduands are sent a Graduation Invitation Package, consisting of:

  • An invitation with two or three guest tickets
  • The Information for Graduands booklet

You can download the Information for Graduands booklet (PDF).

There is also a detailed description of the University's academic dress requirements for each degree and diploma.

The Graduation Invitation Package will be sent to your correspondence address (i.e. the address to which your examination result notices have been sent), three weeks prior to the ceremony. Note that it is your responsibility to ensure that the University has your correct address. You can review your address through MyUni.

All ceremonies will be held in the Great Hall at the Main Quadrangle of the University. Ceremonies last for approximately one hour.

NB: It is not possible to change the date of your graduation ceremony.

Graduation photographs

Memento Photography has been contracted by the University to provide official graduation photographs. A brochure from Memento Photography will be included in the Graduation Invitation Package. Alternatively you may visit the Memento Photography website for further information.

Graduating in absentia

If you have been assigned to a ceremony and you do not attend, you will automatically graduate in absentia and your testamur and academic record will be mailed to your last known correspondence address. If you do not wish to attend a ceremony you may have your degree conferred earlier, at a monthly meeting of the University Senate. For this to happen you must advise the Graduations Office in writing by:

  • email:
  • fax: +61 2 8627 8281
  • post:
    Graduations Office
Level 3, Jane Foss Russell Bldg, G02
    University of Sydney, NSW, 2006.

You must state that you wish to graduate in absentia and include your full name, student number and the address to which your testamur and academic transcripts are to be posted.

NB: You cannot graduate in absentia and subsequently attend a graduation ceremony in Sydney.

Graduands discontinuing

If you are enrolled in an honours year and discontinue and wish to graduate with the pass degree, you must notify your faculty Office in writing.

Please ensure that the University has your correct correspondence address.
